What happens to butterflies and bees during the winter? Do they hibernate or die in the fall?

Friday ~ March 03, 2010

  • I recently saw a Monarch and a yellow butterfly in Ontario and the weather is turning cold now.

  • I think it depends. Monarch butterflies, though, migrate to Mexico or maybe even farther. It's really remarkable. http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/SciRefGuid...

  • butterflys hibernate, i know that for a fact, well, certain species do, they go down to a mountain in mexico, but for the life of me i cannot remember the name of the spot...

  • That depends on the species. Monarchs migrate to Mexico (lucky so and so's). Most other butterflies and moths overwinter as pupae, eggs or larvae. IIRC the Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) is the only butterfly in North America that overwinters as an adult. Note that I haven't said hibernate. In biology, hibernation is a specific condition where the animal lowers it's body temperature a great deal, and lowers it's neural activity until it's near comatose. I don't think this is what happens with overwintering arthropods.

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) don't exactly hibernate. They store up honey to drink (eat) for energy, and burn this energy to maintain the minimal activity to keep warm enough to keep from freezing. Other bees overwinter as adults, pupae, eggs or larvae (not familiar enough with other bees to give more detail).
