Registration and User Title Questions

Tuesday ~ March 03, 2010

  • We are considering a switch to vBulletin and have a few questions we hope you can help with.

    1. We require users to register and use only real names (first [space] last). This is the only ‘moniker’ a user will go by on the system (no aliases in addition to entered real name). Does vB allow this?

1a. If so, we would need to indicate this on the registration screen, e.g. “We require all users to user their real first and last names. Please enter your real name:”
Can this type of language be added to the registration screen?

    2. Looking at the online manual indicates that questions/info can be added to the default registration questions. It appears that only text responses are supported. Can we set up drop down boxes or radio buttons in response to registration questions as well? This will help focus answers to certain info we are seeking.

    3. We will not be using any type of promotion system based on forum performance/usage. However, we would like to have users with a specific title listed below their names, e.g.

    Bill Smith
    President

    Brenda Jones
    Section Leader

    etc.

Can this be accomplished with vB?

Thanks for any help with these!

  • 1- filterning usernames is not actually a integrated feature, but can easily be coded to your demand... (you can hire a coder at vbulletin.org for that purpose!)

1a- the registration screen have text, we call them "phrases" and you can modify these texts to your needs inside the phrase manager...

2- you can create custom fields, like single fields, textareas, dropdown menus, select boxes, checkboxes etc... the manual is a little obsolete, and these new kinds of fields are new to version 3.5...

3- ranks can be applied depending on your selection of filters... also, members titles can be applied per users, per usergroups, or globally, depending on your settings.

  • 1. vBulletin has full support for filtering usernames by a RegEx. There are examples here at vBulletin.com on how to force a username to the format you are describing. There doesn't seem to be a particular guide that covers all instances. You should note that your users will start to complain that their real name is showing up a lot on Google.com. Consider whether you really want to expose them quite that much to the Internet at large.

    2. You modify the phrase as suggested by nexialys.

    3. User Titles can be applied manually by an Administrator as you describe.
