Surat, September 6:
AFTER floods, it’s the fear of diseases that’s plaguing Surat. Four days since schools reopened in the city, but they are still witnessing low turnout of students.
Fearing that their children may contract illnesses like viral fever and water-borne diseases, parents are not keen on sending them to schools.
Following the State Education department’s order, schools in the flood-hit city reopened on September 1 after being closed for three weeks. District Education Officer (DEO), K R Jhanjrukia said, ‘‘Parents are concerned about the health of their wards. There are many flood-affected families who have yet to come to terms with their tragedy. But there are schools which have registered about 60 per cent attendance.’’ ‘‘We are expecting the situation to become normal within a week,’’ he added.
Parents, however, have reason to be apprehensive. They believe the city is yet to be declared disease-free after the devastating floods. Since children are more prone to contract viral and water-borne diseases, they do not want to take chances. ‘‘I have decided not to send my daughter to school until situation becomes normal.
People are dying in the city due to unknown diseases. Under this circumstances, I do not want to take any chances,’’ said Paresh Prajapati, a resident of Athwalines.
Neha Pradhan, a housewife from Nanpura, is another worried parent. Her son studies in a school located in Rander. ‘‘Though the school has cleaned its premises after the floods, squalor is still there in its surrounding areas. I can take care of my son at home, but who would look after him in school,’’ she said.
