I would like to know if you have to have your eyes dialated before you do the eye test?

  • yea i think so. remember them having to put drops in my eyes to make them dilated before the actual testing...

  • Well I don't think it is absolutely necessary as I have only had that done once out of many eye tests I have taken.

  • You don't have to..

Depends on your situation. It's always better to get them dilated because the eye doctor can see right around the retina. If you have diabetes or glaucoma it is a must. However, the eye doctor will make that decision for you.

They go away in a few hours and it's only once every couple of years.

  • Having your eyes dilated is technically up to you, but it is a good idea to have it done at least every 2 or 3 years. If you do get your eyes dilated, it will be after the doctor does some entrance tests and determines your prescription (the part where you look through lenses and say what is clear). Once you are dilated, the doctor will look at your eyes with the slit lamp (where you put your face in a face rest and the doctor uses a machine to shine a light in your eye) and with an ophthalmoscope (another light). Some optometrists can have you come back a different day for just the dilation at no extra cost if you are unable to do it the same day as the rest of your exam. Just feel free to talk to your doctor about your concerns before he/she gets started.
