My dog is about 9 months old and he's pretty good about peeing on mats or outside, but he can never seem to poop there! He usually misses and doesn't seem to understand he needs to go outside.
What do I do?

You have already taught him that its okay to go inside since you put the mats inside. Discontinue your use of the mats and require your dog to go outside. If he is going when you are not looking or not home, you need to crate him during those times to prevent it from happening. It will only get harder and harder to fix this as he ages, do it now!
Make sure u pick up his food at about 7:00.
Just keep on taking him out and when he poops outside give him a treat and he will get the hang of it!!
